Historical Recreational Fisheries

Information on recreational fisheries activities in Canada is based on the results of the Survey of Recreational Fishing in Canada conducted every five years by DFO, in cooperation with all regional, provincial and territorial fisheries licensing agencies.

Information is presented for 1975, 1980 and 1985 in summary tables. Detailed tables by jurisdiction cover angler populations, angler effort, harvest, major purchases and direct expenditures.

Data is presented as reported for each year. Some considerations of interest are:

B. C. Tidal Waters (nonresidents)
This group was not covered in 1980 due to lack of information on the population. Coverage in 1975 was limited to those holders of nonresident boat licences. In 1985 all nonresident anglers 16 years of age and over required a licence to fish.

Ontario (residents)
The province of Ontario had no licence requirement for resident anglers until the late 1980s. Sampling in 1975 was based on telephone books and city directories covering the province as completely as possible. Sampling was proportional to the estimated numbers of households in each region of the province.

In 1980, samples were drawn from the municipal tax rolls to provide for more complete coverage of the province. Tax rolls were stratified into the eight OMNR management regions for sampling purposes. Sampling was disproportionate with sampling in the north at twice the southern sampling rate.

In 1985, sampling was conducted using telephone pre-screening with sample sizes established in each of the eight OMNR regions based on the reliability estimated for days fished found in the 1980 survey.

Quebec
In 1975 and 1980, the province conducted their own surveys. The 1975 survey was designed in such a way as to reflect the basic information being collected in the other jurisdictions. In 1980, however, cost restrictions did not allow for as complete coverage and this is reflected in the tables presented for that year. Some effort was made to establish costs within the structure used elsewhere, but details were not complete enough to mirror all areas.

All other jurisdictions
All data for other provinces and territories is directly comparable across years.
