An important aspect of the relationship between climate and agriculture in Quebec is the diversity of production conditions from region to region. Projections based on the interpretation of climate change models suggest that

  • the rate of development of grain crops may increase, with the time between seeding and harvesting being reduced (by up to three weeks) in most regions. In northern regions, the increased development rate could also reduce the risk of frost-induced crop injury

  • production may expand northward. Southern Quebec could therefore see the current geographic extent of its fruit and vegetable production shift into more northerly regions.

The production of maple syrup is closely tied to freeze and thaw phenomena. A change in temperatures could significantly affect the volume of maple syrup produced.
