Geomatics Services for National Parks and Ocean Spaces and Land Protection

This information represents activities in the Earth Sciences Sector Programs (2002-2006). Please refer to Priorities for information on current Earth Sciences Sector Programs.

The Geomatics Services for Management of National Parks and Offshore Areas project recently offered support for land protection in several contexts. First, land protection services were offered in areas deemed of heritage value, such as the Tuktut Nogait National Park. Land protection services were also extended to the petroleum industry through offshore well surveys so that the industry could exercise its rights for oil and gas production and exploration. Finally, land protection efforts were offered to private rights holders as part of land development projects within national parkland.

The Geomatics Services for National Parks and Ocean Spaces project is an enabler, helping private rights holders and land administration agencies to define the spatial extent to which they may exercise/administer their property rights. The project also helps to highlight these groups' responsibilities in providing public notification of their land rights.
