Projects

This information represents activities in the Earth Sciences Sector Programs (2002-2006). Please refer to Priorities for information on current Earth Sciences Sector Programs.

The GSDNR program is divided into several projects, each dealing with its own core set of geospatial information. This information is essential for a wide range of applications and decision processes related to the management of natural resources. GSDNR's projects are as follows:

Communications, Outreach and Assessment

Project Leader: Christian Prevost

This project supports the GSDNR program through outreach and communications activities and coordinates client/stakeholder consultation including risk management, impact assessment, program evaluation and redefinition. More...

Image Processing Standards for Earth Observation Data

Project Leader: Phil Teillet

This project generates new tools for the characterization, correction, and integration of earth observation (EO) data. The project also provides quality assessment reports, assesses users' needs for calibrated EO data, and standardizes new EO products through the use of sensorwebs. More...

National Imagery Coverage - Landsat 7

Project Leader: Mike Major

The goals of this project are to produce orthorectified Landsat 7 satellite images that cover the entire country. This project also provides orthoimages to participating partners and makes the geometric correction matrices, and control point databases available to clients. Where Landsat 7 data are not available, the project seeks to produce Radarsat-1 orthoimages to complete the coverage of Northern Canada where Landsat-7 data are not available. More...

GeoNames Applications

Project Leader: André Mainville

The latest technology is being used to distribute and make accessible Canada's official geographical names and associated data via the Internet. More...

National Atlas Frameworks

Project Leader: Peter Paul

This project provides national-scale digital base maps (1:1M) that combine frameworks associated with people (census, transportation, populated places) and the environment (watersheds, protected areas, land cover). The project also creates new themes and evaluates the need for more national frameworks. More...

National Elevation Data

Project Leader: Michel Cardinal

This project will produce digital elevation models (DEMs) in accordance with the national standard using the best available provincial and federal data. The production and maintenance of altimetry data will be carried out by federal and interested provincial partners. More...

National Hydro Network

Project Leader: Yves Belzile

This project will produce geospatial hydrography data in compliance with the NHN Standard officially adopted at the national level by the Canadian Council On Geomatics (CCOG) in August 2004. The best available federal and provincial data will be used to create the first version of the NHN, with complete national coverage, by 2009. The production of the NHN will be carried out by federal and interested provincial and territorial partners. Because this project encompasses key concepts of both hydrography and hydrology to describe Canada's surface water system, the NHN model is flexible enough to support several applications including cartographic representation and data analysis in order to satisfy the requirements of a varied user base. The NHN describes and models, as network components, features of the Canadian surface-water system (inland water and coastline). The documentation describing the official NHN Standard is now available. More...
