The CFS completed the Feasibility of Afforestation for Carbon Sequestration (FAACS) initiative in March 2005. The FAACS initiative was the first phase in assessing the ability of afforestation/reforestation to help meet Canada’s Kyoto obligations. This initial phase was essentially a preparatory measure intended to evaluate whether a large-scale national afforestation effort is feasible and what a potential large-scale program would involve.
The main focus of the FAACS initiative was to evaluate the feasibility of afforestation and undertake information collection and land assessment research on privately owned lands as well as help establish Canada’s Kyoto Protocol carbon measurement and accounting infrastructure to support the mandatory A/R reporting requirements. Work activities in FAACS have included the collection of information on past afforestation in Canada and the development of analytical models to estimate future afforestation. In partnership with provinces, industry and forestry associations, five afforestation pilots have also been established across Canada to test the responsiveness of landowners to a range of incentives to expand forest cover in Canada for climate change and economic benefits.
