Proactive disclosure Print version | Vectorizing Topographic Data at the 1:50 000 Scale for the Canadian North
The vectorization activity consists in converting existing paper topographic maps at the 1:50 000 into Digital Topographic Data (DTD). These data will make it possible to enrich the NTDB, on the one hand, and, on the other, to contribute to many activities, including Change detection to determine if the topographic information is still up-to-date; Topolan7 to update existing data with Landsat7 satellite imagery; Planimetric correction to improve DTD accuracy; and, lastly, GeoBase-Altimetry and Hydrography, a process for generating digital elevation models from contours. In the fiscal year 2005-2006, approximately 250 new data sets will be produced for the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. To date, 4,197 NTDB data sets have been produced to cover all three Northern Territories. Planning for vectorization production takes into account priorities identified by our customers and partners as well as the availability of paper maps. The data will be gradually made available on the Centre for Topographic Information's Web Site. The vectorization work is carried out by the Canadian geomatics industry and the data are verified by the NTDB vectorization team working under the Geomatics for Northern Development Program.
