The program provides healing from
the effects of family violence using a holistic approach that involves the physical,
mental, spiritual and emotional well being of victim(s), children, offenders, extended
families and the community. It targets Aboriginal people who are experiencing problems
with family violence, as well as serving non-Aboriginal people who are in crisis and
seeking support.
Program Objectives
- To deliver a community-based wellness program that is
designed to assist families from the 12 First Nations communities;
- To assist and support First Nations families with a
particular focus on women and children who:
- leave their home communities to escape situation of domestic
violence;
- have come to Prince Albert to visit or live near an
incarcerated partner or parent; or
- who return to their home communities to face their on-going
violent environment;
- To provide support services to the whole family unit,
including partners, parents and extended family members; and
- To provide support in a non-threatening manner.
Services Offered in 2002/2003
- Support and assistance for women and children in the City of
Prince Albert who are dealing with issues of family violence;
- Individual and family counselling with special attention to
children and the family unit;
- Facilitating support groups;
- Supporting families in dealing with other agencies while
they are living in the City of Prince Albert;
- Acting as a liaison with the justice system and a referral
service to other agencies;
- Providing follow-up services in Prince Albert and the home
communities;
- Developing a network of service providers in the home
communities; and
- Developing resource services.
Program Organization and Management
The program employs a wellness program co-ordinator who
will work under the supervision of the Prince Albert Grand Council Women's Commission and
the Prince Albert Grand
Council executive director. The program works co-operatively with the
Prince Albert Indian and Metis Friendship
Centre. Elders provide guidance and support.
