Dead birds

Avian flu monitoring now requires that all dead birds be reported. The discovery of one or more dead birds must be reported to Services Québec by calling
1-800-363-1363 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. daily.

Call before you handle a dead bird. If you discover a dead bird outside Services Québec business hours, we recommend you do not handle it. Contact Services Québec as soon as possible.

Your call will be handled by Services Québec agents and forwarded to the dead bird reporting center .

Center staff will tell you whether you should preserve the dead bird (so that wildlife protection agents can pick it up) or whether you should dispose of it.

If you have to move the bird before contacting Services Québec, however, we advise you to follow these steps:

  1. Always wear gloves.
  2. Place one hand inside a double plastic bag.
  3. Grab the bird with the bag.
  4. Turn the bag inside out over the bird.
  5. Close the bag.
  6. Place the bag in an isolated spot that is cold, if possible (do not use household appliances).
  7. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
  8. Contact Services Québec, which will explain what to do next.
