Trade with Canada
Europe remains, after the USA, Canada's most important partner. As Europe continues to move towards a powerful and influential
unity, its importance to Canada will certainly increase. This will of course include the economic area of our relationship which has
expanded well in recent years. Two-way trade with Europe in 2003 amounted to over Cdn. $ 59 billion. Some notable increases in our exports have occurred in high value-added sectors of the Canadian economy
including information and communications technology, life sciences, and aerospace and transportation industries.
Almost one-quarter of all Foreign Direct
Investment (FDI) inflows into Canada came from the EU in 2003, with over CAD $1.4 billion in new investment. The cumulative stock of European investment has reached CAD $97 billion. This investment is vital to extend the international "reach" of our companies into the global economy (including the NAFTA market) and to enhance the managerial, marketing and technological capabilities of our firms.
