Former President Rau dies

Former German President Johannes Rau has died. A statement released by his office said he passed away at his Berlin residence at the age of 75 after being ill for some time. Throughout his political career, Rau sought to promote deeper ties with Israel. In 2000 he used a speech to the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, to ask Israel and the Jewish people for forgiveness for the Holocaust. Rau was premier of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia for two decades and was the Social Democrats' candidate for chancellor in the 1986 federal election.


Angela Merkel elected Chancellor

The German parliament elected Angela Merkel to the office of Chancellor. Gerhard Schröder's successor is the first woman ever to head a German government. Angela Merkel received 397 out of a possible 612 votes, obtaining the absolute majority needed to be elected Chancellor on the first ballot.

Current information by the World Health Organisation about Avian Influenza

Bird Flu: Current Prohibitions and Restrictions

Importing birds or bird products into the EU from countries where avian
influenza has occurred is strictly prohibited!
  This includes birds and bird
products that were obtained in Canada but were originally from one of the
affected countries.

Current travel restrictions from all other non-EU countries: No more than
five (5) birds may be imported into the EU.  These animals must be
accompanied by a veterinary certificate and a statement by the owner!

The 56th Berlin International Film Festival is to be held from 9 to 19 February 2006. Berlin’s largest cultural extravaganza attracts 16,000 expert visitors every year for one of the key events in the international film scene. But the public don’t lose out!
