Yukon Teacher Certification Information

To be eligible for a Yukon Professional Teaching Certificate, an applicant

  • must be a person of good moral character, sound judgement and, in all respects, a fit and proper person to teach school students;
  • must be a Canadian citizen or a landed immigrant or be otherwise qualified to meet the work requirements of a teaching contract in the Yukon;
  • must have completed a program of academic and professional preparation for teaching that consists of either:
     
    • an approved four-year bachelor of education or five-year bachelor of education degree from a recognized university or college; or
    • an approved baccalaureate degree from a recognized university or college plus an approved program of teacher preparation, of not less than one academic year, from a recognized university or college;
  • must have completed one full course of Yukon studies, of which at least 1/2 course must be in Yukon or Northern Canadian Studies and any balance must be in multicultural education or the sociological and philosophical foundations of education within the culture of the Yukon First Nations (*see note below).

*An applicant for a professional certificate who is deficient in only the Yukon Studies portion of the requirements, may be granted a professional certificate on an interim basis, for a period not exceeding two years, pending completion of those requirements.
