Open, Accessible
Internet service providers (ISPs) and application service providers (ASPs) can purchase bandwidth from SuperNet in Extended Area communities at standard rates throughout the province. These service providers can then offer high-speed network services to businesses and residences in and around the Extended Area communities.
Self-Sustaining
Alberta SuperNet is designed to be self-sustaining. Revenue generated by
SuperNet customers - including government offices, schools, health facilities,
libraries and municipal government offices, as well as Internet service providers
(ISPs) and application service providers (ASPs) - will be applied to the operation
and maintenance of the network.
Scaleable
Alberta SuperNet is scaleable, with a capacity that can be expanded to meet the high-speed telecommunications needs of Albertans now, and far into the future.
The growth of the network will be continually monitored and managed, to keep Alberta SuperNet current.
Existing Infrastructure
Alberta SuperNet was designed to use existing infrastructure, wherever feasible. Representatives of Bell, Axia SuperNet Ltd. and the Government of Alberta's SuperNet team negotiate with owners of these existing networks to establish usage agreements.
Network Security
Security is important, and the Alberta SuperNet design team has focused efforts on delivering a secure environment. A three-tiered scheme - including the use of VLAN (Virtual LAN - Local Area Network) and VPN (Virtual Private Network) technology as well as security screening devices located at each Meet-Me Facility - is used to ensure the network is secure.
