Veterans' Week 2006 - Share the Story
The theme for Veterans' Week 2006 is Share the Story, highlighting, among many stories, the 50th Anniversary of the First United Nations Peacekeeping Force. We invite Canadians to share personal stories of remembrance as a way to develop a deeper understanding of the sacrifices and achievements of those who served Canada. These stories can be told by Veterans, relatives, CF members, youth; anyone who has a story to tell.

50th Anniversary of the First United Nations Peacekeeping Force
2006 marks a special milestone in the international pursuit of peace. This is the 50th anniversary of major United Nations (UN) peacekeeping efforts - the pioneering approach to diffusing conflicts by sending in neutral forces to monitor ceasefires and nurture peace in regions of the world in turmoil. Canada has been involved in these peace support missions from the beginning, dating back to the Suez Crisis. This 1956 Middle East standoff between Egypt on one side and Israel, Britain and France on the other threatened to draw the world into war.

Heroes Remember
Veterans Affairs Canada has recorded almost 1,600 hours of video and audio conversations with approximately 75 veterans of the First World War and another 675 Second World War and Korea veterans. These interviews offer rare and personal memories of those individuals who lived the experience, first-hand. Each interview has a story attached and makes up a bigger picture. Each piece makes it possible to tell a nation's history through the eyes of those who served. Now, VAC presents them to you so you can try to understand what these valiant men and women experienced and so that their stories live on forever.
