Geological Outreach Activities & Teacher Resources
Outreach Maps Generated from Remote Sensing Data
Four maps that are great learning tools. Two satellite maps:
one each showing the cities of Calgary and Edmonton. As well, a geological
and topographic map of Alberta. These maps are full-scale for printing onto
a plotter. Great detail and people will have fun trying to find their houses
on the satellite maps!
If the files are too large for you to download, you can purchase
a CD with all four maps from our office for
$5.00 (INF 134).
Virtual Fieldtrip: Rock Walk Edmonton
Downtown Edmonton has a fascinating collection of building stones.
These building stones are beautiful to look at and represent a useful educational
resource: all major rock types and rock-forming minerals are clearly
displayed, and some of the rocks contain large fossils. Furthermore, the
stone in a number of buildings has an historical and architectural
connection.
Take a virtual
Rock Walk of downtown Edmonton. This PowerPoint
show assists you in learning more about the rocks and minerals in a building
through an interactive map of downtown.
If you don't have PowerPoint,
you can download
the viewer from Microsoft.
Make sure to download the Rock
Walk handout (3 MB PDF) created for a 2005 Rock Walk for
teachers. The handout contains additional
material on igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.
Six presentations were given by Dixon
Edwards at the Alberta Teachers Association Science Council Conference
2004 on November 12, 2004, at a workshop entitled Rocks, Resources, History
and Society: Connecting Geology to Societal Desires and Needs.
The information is provided for your use. Please acknowledge your source as:

They are in flash format. If you don't see the presentations, you will need to install the free Flash player from Macromedia.

Geoscape Edmonton
Geoscape Edmonton is an illustrated poster of interesting geological facts, features and history in and around Edmonton, Alberta. The poster contains colour illustrations, photographs and descriptions of the formation, historical resources, hazards and geology of the North Saskatchewan River valley and the Edmonton region. This high quality, 98 x 68 cm (38 x 27 in) poster is a resource for students and anyone interested in our natural world. View Geoscape Edmonton (3.5 MB PDF).
The primary purpose of Geoscape Edmonton is to provide a resource for anyone interested in the natural environment of Edmonton. This poster shows how intertwined geology and resources are with the history of Edmonton; e.g., gold panning, mining, etc. Written in generalized terms, Geoscape Edmonton is appropriate for the general public and is especially well suited to primary and secondary students.
There are eight panels, each can be a different learning module:
- geohazards
- geological time
- river valley
- river valley geology
- regional resources
- valley resources
- glacial geology
- groundwater
The poster is 98 x 68 centimetres (38 x 27 inches) and can be purchased for $10 from the Alberta Geological Survey (422-1927).
