Maintenance Enforcement Program

This program is responsible for the collection and enforcement of maintenance payments under court orders.

The Director has a number of powers to assist with the enforcement of maintenance orders, some of which are:

  • the ability to issue garnishments to income sources;
  • the ability to issue a lien on real property;
  • the ability to seize bank accounts;
  • the ability to revoke/suspend motor vehicle privileges; and
  • the ability to examine a payor as to his or her financial circumstances.

All maintenance orders made by the courts will be automatically registered with the Program for enforcement.

An InfoLine has been introduced to provide general information about the Program. This service is available twenty-four hours a day by calling:

424-0050 (Metro Halifax residents)
1-800-357-9248 (toll-free for residents outside Metro)

Also available on this site is a short video providing information on the the Maintenance Enforcement Program. See our video section to view this video.
