Regional Director
As Regional Director for the Southern Region, this position oversees a diverse team of multi-disciplinary individuals. The Regional Director administers the mandate of the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act and the Water Act. The Regional Director is responsible for a consistent and timely approval process, a firm and fair enforcement process, an education oriented compliance process, an inspection program to ensure compliance, development and implementation of regional strategies and plans, a safe drinking water program and service orientation to our clients.

Regional Approvals Manager

The Regional Approvals Team delivers the approvals program for both the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act and the Water Act. Activities that require authorizations are identified in the legislation. In general terms this includes activities that can affect a water body and activities that have emissions with a potential effect on air, land and water that must be monitored, regulated and reported. Examples are; industries, municipal drinking water and wastewater, landfills, pesticides, land reclamation, surface and groundwater allocations, wetlands and watercourses.

The approvals team also administers programs that include; waste management grants for recycling and regional solid waste management projects, Alberta Water Management and Erosion Control grants, drinking water abatement program and the water use priority system during water shortages.

Martin Foy
Regional Compliance Manager
The Regional Compliance Team delivers the Department's compliance program for both the Water Act and the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act within the region. Proactive facility inspections, compliance education, responding to environmental complaints, report reviews, conducting investigations and delivering enforcement actions are some of the many major activities performed by the regional compliance staff.
The Regional Monitoring Team is responsible for the ambient monitoring of the region’s air and water resources. Our team also conducts snow surveys; measures stream flows and lake /reservoir levels; gathers and maintains water quality data; establishes and maintains meteorological stations; collects and analyzes ambient air data; and conducts special air monitoring surveys.

Ian Dyson
Regional Environmental Management Manager
Regional Environmental Management provides environmental leadership and stewardship and promotes integrated resource management in southern Alberta. The team is comprised of three units: Environmental Integration, Environmental Awareness and Technical Services. Environmental Integration provides coordination and project management support and water quality services for departmental, interdepartmental and multi-party resource integration, partnership and planning initiatives. Environmental Awareness delivers communication, public involvement and environmental education services. Technical Services maintains real time water operations data, undertakes computer modeling for water management and maintains water infrastructure plans.

South Saskatchewan River Basin Water Management Plan
Alberta Environment is preparing a multi-phase water management plan for the South Saskatchewan River Basin (SSRB), which includes the sub-basins of the Red Deer, Bow, and Oldman Rivers (including the South Saskatchewan).
