Awards and Scholarships

Alberta Community Development offers a variety of awards and scholarships, ranging from the arts to sports and human rights. The application criteria and deadlines vary with each award or scholarship so it is important to verify information with the program staff prior to making application.

Alberta Award for the Study of Canadian Human Rights and Multiculturalism

Established in recognition of Alberta's centennial and the contributions and experiences of our diverse population, the Alberta Award for the Study of Canadian Human Rights and Multiculturalism supports graduate studies in Canadian human rights or multiculturalism. Graduate students in an Alberta public post secondary institution whose studies will contribute to the advancement of human rights and multiculturalism are encouraged to apply. One award of $10,000 will be made each year. Application deadline for 2006 is March 1. This award is made possible through the Human Rights, Citizenship and Multiculturalism Education Fund. Parks and Protected Areas Volunteer Awards

Alberta Parks and Protected Areas present this set of awards to groups and individuals who demonstrate voluntary excellence in assisting Alberta Community Development in achieving its goal of ensuring Alberta’s natural heritage remains preserved and accessible. Awards include: the Green Shield Award, Steward Awards (Service Excellence, Outstanding Individual and Outstanding Group), Parks and Protected Areas Achievement Award, Campground Host Hospitality Award, Partnership Appreciation Award, Teamwork Award, Enforcement Assistance Award, Facility Enhancement Award and Volunteer Leadership Award. Diversity Leadership Award of Distinction

The Alberta Human Rights and Citizenship Commission Diversity Leadership Award of Distinction recognizes organizations that embrace diversity in their workforce, encourage respect and inclusion, and are working toward eliminating discrimination and barriers to fair employment practices. This award is one of 13 Alberta Business Awards of Distinction http://www.abbusinessawards.ab.ca/index.htm. The submission deadline is mid-November each year. Queen's Golden Jubilee Awards and Scholarships

These awards and scholarships are part of the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Recognition Act that received Royal Assent on March 20, 2002 and commemorates the Queen’s accession to the throne and her service to the Commonwealth.

Premier’s Citizenship Award and the Queen's Golden Jubilee Citizenship Medal

These awards recognize one student from each Alberta high school for their contribution to the community through good citizenship, leadership, community service or volunteering. From this group, the five most outstanding recipients of the Premier’s Citizenship Award will be selected to receive the Queen's Golden Jubilee Citizenship Medal and $5,000, which the students may use toward their future education or development. Grant MacEwan Literary Awards.

In recognition of the late Dr. Grant MacEwan, Alberta Community Development created the Grant MacEwan Literary Awards to recognize and commemorate his lifelong achievements in literary excellence.

Persons Case Scholarships.  Persons Case Scholarships were established in 1979 to mark the 50th anniversary of the "Persons Case" victory. The scholarships are awarded by Community Development and funded by the Alberta Heritage Scholarship Fund. Scholarships ranging in amounts from $1,000 to $5,000 are awarded each December to students whose studies and career goals will ultimately contribute to the advancement of women, or those who are studying in fields where members of their gender are traditionally few in number. Both men and women may apply for the scholarships.

Roger Soderstrom Scholarship.  The Roger Soderstrom Scholarship assists student research at the graduate or extended study program level in the fields of architectural preservation; urban planning and conservation; heritage resource management; archaeology; history or palaeontology. It is open to candidates who are Canadian citizens and have been Alberta residents for at least six months prior to application. Normally up to $3,000 is available every year through an endowment. There are two application deadlines: September 1st and February 1st.

Energize Recreation Volunteer Recognition Awards.  The Energize Awards program began in 1977 to recognize outstanding Albertans who volunteer in the area of recreation. Individuals may be nominated for their overall contributions to recreation and parks at the local, regional, provincial, national and international levels, as well as for years of service. The awards are presented annually to four individuals at the Energize Workshop held in conjunction with the Alberta Recreation and Parks Association conference, usually in October. Nomination criteria and forms are mailed out to all municipalities in April/May of every year with a submission deadline of June 30.

Athlete of the Year Awards 
The Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation has initiated the Alberta Athletes of the Year program to recognize the significant achievements, performances and contributions of amateur athletes at the international level.

Under this new program awards will be presented to one male and one female athlete in each of the following categories:

  • Junior category of under 21 years of age
  • Open category 21 years of age and over

Volunteer Recognition Awards
Outstanding volunteers who are devoted to the development of sport in Alberta will continue to be recognized. Sport Volunteer Recognition Awards will be presented to outstanding volunteers who devote their time and effort to the development of sport in the Province of Alberta.

Jimmie Condon Athletic Scholarships. These scholarships were named in honour of Jimmie Condon, who supported and promoted amateur sports in Calgary, and was well known for his philanthropic activities. The scholarships awards athletic excellence among Alberta's post-secondary students. The scholarships are valued at $1,800 and are awarded to Alberta residents enrolled in a full-time program at an university, college or technical institute in Alberta. Students must be a member of a designated sports team or a member of a Provincial Disabled Athletic Team recognized by the Alberta Athlete Development Program.

Alberta Coaches and Officials Recognition Award.  The Alberta Coaching and Officiating Recognition Awards program recognizes coaches and officials for their successful and outstanding achievements in developing Alberta's amateur athletes and in officiating sports involving Alberta's amateur athletes. The awards are given out biennially at the Alberta Coaches and Officials Symposium by the Alberta Sport, Recreation Parks and Wildlife Foundation. Nominations are requested in early spring or late fall, dependent on the dates of the symposium.

Stars of the Millennium - Volunteerism Awards ProgramThe Wild Rose Foundation established Stars of the Millennium to honour individuals recognized by community organizations and their peers for giving of their time and to their community through volunteerism. The awards program includes categories for youth, adult and seniors. Nomination forms are distributed across Alberta in early June. The awards are presented annually on December 5th, International Volunteer Day.
