The Voluntary Sector Initiative: Leadership and Management

The Voluntary Sector Initiative was jointly led and managed by the federal government and voluntary sector. Both sector and government established structures to lead their respective work on the VSI. For the voluntary sector, the Voluntary Sector Forum was created to lead and oversee the remainder of the VSI until it ended in 2005. The Forum was supported by a Secretariat.

Within the federal government, the Minister of Social Development was responsible for the Voluntary Sector Initiative. The Community Development and Partnerships Directorate at Social Development Canada supported the Minister in this role and coordinated VSI activities across government.

A Joint Steering Committee oversaw the initiative overall. The following is an overview of how both government and sector worked together under the VSI. Click on each committee for a description of its role and membership.
