Frequently Asked Questions

When a position becomes vacant, the hiring manager will initiate a recruitment process by conducting a search of this inventory to seek applicants who meet the requirements of that position.

Submit your application on-line. It’s now quicker and easier!

Transport Canada uses electronic-based recruiting for some of its Inspector and other technical positions. To be included in this inventory, you must register online by visiting the About our Jobs page. Please do not send us your resume by e-mail.

By building an electronic inventory of applicants, we have made the recruitment process quicker and easier for both managers and job seekers. When you register your application to the inventory, you are making your profile accessible to all hiring managers across the country.

Please note : This is a thorough application process that will require approximately 30 to 60 minutes to complete, depending on the job for which you register. If it is not a good time for you to begin the registration process now, please return to our site at a more convenient time and complete your application then.

Regularly update your account with your user ID and password

When you register to Transport Canada’s electronic recruitment inventory, you will automatically be sent a user ID and password to your e-mail address. These will allow you to access your application on a regular basis to update it.

Don’t be shy! It is to your advantage to let us know when you acquire new experience, education, and certification or even when your contact information has changed. By regularly updating your application, you are ensuring that managers have access to your most up-to-date information at all times.

Hint : When typing your user ID, please note that the first five characters are letters and the final three characters are numbers. If you have any difficulty entering the user ID or password, you may also cut and paste them directly from the original e-mail. If at any time you misplace your user ID and password, you can request that they be sent to you again by clicking on the Forgotten Password link on this website.

How long your application remain active

Depending on the job for which you register, your application will be retained for a period of 6 or 12 months. Each time you log back into to your account, you will extend the retention period for an additional 6 or 12 months. It is your responsibility to update your application regularly. If you wish to continue to be considered for employment, all you need to do is update your application.

Retention periods:

  • Civil Aviation Inspectors: 6 months
  • All other jobs: 12 months

What happens to your application once you have registered

You will be contacted for further consideration as soon as positions for which you meet the qualifications become available.

When managers search the inventory for candidates, they may include a number of criteria in their search, based on the needs for that specific position. For example, managers will select the experience and education requirements for their position. They may also limit the area of selection to a region, and limit their search to candidates who have demonstrated interest in that work location.

Vacant positions

The number of vacant positions within Transport Canada is constantly changing, based on a number of factors such as the availability of financial resources, attrition and operational requirements.

Being selected by a manager to compete for a position

Once managers have conducted a search of the inventory, it is their responsibility to validate that you, in fact, meet the minimum requirements of the position. If you do, you will receive notification that you have been selected to compete ─ by e-mail, telephone or mail. Further details will also be provided to you at that time.

A typical selection process

A typical selection process may include:

  • A written technical knowledge examination
  • An interview (at which you may be required to provide proof of occupational certification, diploma, degree and/or past experience)
  • Reference checks
  • A reliability and/or security clearance which involves a criminal records check, fingerprinting, and when applicable, a credit check
  • Medical suitability if applicable.

Travel and relocation expenses

Relocation expenses are not normally reimbursed to a person on initial appointment to the Public Service.

If you are not an employee of the federal Public Service, please be aware that any associated travel and/or relocation costs incurred, are not normally reimbursed/paid for by Transport Canada. However, in exceptional circumstances when it is considered that payment of such expenses is essential for effective staffing action, the travel and/or relocation assistance to be provided, if any, shall be negotiated with the candidate during the selection phase.

Therefore, please be aware that if you select work locations that require you to travel (during the selection process) or relocate (if a job offer is made), the onus may be on you to bear the costs of any travel and/or relocation.

Federal Public Service employees may wish to review their travel and relocation entitlements by visiting the Treasury Board Secretariat.

Good Luck!
