Ice Navigation in Canadian Waters

Every ship of 100 tons gross tonnage or over, navigating in Canadian waters in which ice may be encountered, is required to carry, and make proper navigational use of the Canadian Coast Guard publication Ice Navigation in Canadian Waters. The document is in two parts. Part I, Operating in Ice, pertains to operational considerations such as communications, reporting, advisories, and icebreaker support. Part II, Additional Information for Navigation in Ice-Covered Waters, is educational in nature, with information provided to help familiarize watchkeepers with the Canadian ice environment, navigation procedures in ice, and vessel performance in ice.

The document is available in both official languages from any authorized Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS) Chart Dealer. The catalogue number is T31-73/1999E; the ISBN number is 0-660-17873-7. A list of dealers is available on the CHS web site at http://www.charts.gc.ca/chs/en/.

The publication Ice Navigation in Canadian Waters dated September 1999 is the most current version and there have been no amendments. As the information contained in this document does not vary from year to year, the document does not require frequent revisions. Canadian Hydrographic Services, as distributor of the publication, will maintain a mailing list for those who purchase the publication, including those who were on the list of our previous distributor. Any amendments will be sent out automatically whenever required.

Winter Navigation on the River and Gulf of St. Lawrence: Practical Notebook for Marine Engineers and Deck Officers, January 2005, TP 14335 E

Seafarers that are not familiar with vessels operating in ice conditions may not fully appreciate the risks involved and in consequence may not be adequately prepared. This practical notebook is complementary to Ice Navigation in Canadian Waters and is intended for use by ships' owners and operators, charterers, agents, and ship's officers who seek practical information on the ship's response and operation, as well as to provide a better understanding of hazards which may be encountered when transiting Eastern Canadian ice covered waters during the winter navigation season.

Icebreaking Operations Levels of Service

The Canadian Coast Guard has published service standards that describe what icebreaking services will be provided, where and when they are available, and how quickly they will respond to a request. You may download a copy of Icebreaking Operations Levels of Service [html 107KB] [pdf 1174KB] for your own reference.
