Advance Payment Program - as of December 4, 2006
In May 2006, the Government of Canada announced an Advance Payment program for former students who resided at a listed Indian Residential School (IRS) and who were 65 years or older on May 30, 2005, the day the Settlement Agreement negotiations were initiated. Applications will be accepted until December 31, 2006.
Upon application and verification, eligible former students will receive an $8000 payment which will then be deducted from any future Common Experience Payment or other payment related to their experience at an Indian Residential School.

It is estimated there are 80 000 people alive today who attended Indian residential schools, according to Statistics Canada.
Of the 17997 Indian residential school claims filed against the Government of Canada by former students, 4934 have been resolved.

Claims in ADR Process - as of December 4, 2006
In early 2004, the Government of Canada began receiving applications for participation in an out-of-court dispute resolution system for former students of Indian residential schools. This system offers former students the option of resolving their abuse claims out of court in a fast, private, respectful and humane manner. The Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) process is designed so that claims can be decided by an independent decision-maker who is not a government employee.
Model A is designed for claims of sexual abuse or serious physical abuse. Model B is designed for claims of physical abuse or claims of wrongful confinement.
The government is giving priority in the ADR process to elderly claimants who are 65 years and older and those in failing health.
