How long before I hear from you?

Once you have registered, you may be contacted for further consideration only when positions for which you are eligible become available.

What are the minimum qualifications to be included in the inventory?

Each of the jobs listed on this website has specific experience, education and/or occupational certification requirements.

  1. Click on the About Our Jobs page of this website for a list of positions
  2. Click on View Job Profile you are interested in for an overview of the qualifications, duties and responsibilities and other information for that position.

Important: You must meet all of the requirements of the job at the time of your application. It is your responsibility to demonstrate in your application that you meet those requirements. Failure to do so may result in your application being disqualified without further notice.

What happens to my application after I apply?

By applying, you are submitting your candidacy for consideration when vacancies arise at Transport Canada in your area of interest. You are not applying for a specific one-time competition or job opening, but rather, you are being placed in an inventory. When positions become vacant, Transport Canada managers search the inventory for candidates who meet the requirements of their position.

If a manager conducts a search of the inventory and I meet the criteria, what happens?

Once managers have conducted a search of the inventory, it is their responsibility to validate that you, meet the minimum requirements of the position. If you do, you will receive notification that you have been selected to compete, by e-mail, telephone or mail. Further details on the assessment process will be provided to you at that time.

Why can't I submit my CV by e-mail, mail or fax?

Transport Canada now uses electronic-based recruiting for its inspector positions. To be included in this inventory, you must register online by visiting the About our jobs page.

By building an electronic inventory of applicants, we have made the recruitment process quicker and easier for both managers and job seekers. When you register to the inventory, you are making your profile accessible to all hiring managers across the country with one easy application.

How long will my application remain active?

Depending on which job you have applied to, your application will be retained for a period of 6 or 12 months. Each time you log back into to your account, you will extend the retention period for an additional 6 or 12 months. It is your responsibility to update your application regularly. If you wish to continue to be considered for employment, all you need to do is update your application.

Retention periods:

  • Civil Aviation Inspectors: 6 months
  • All other jobs: 12 months

Submitting Your Online Application

What do I do if I forget my user ID or password?

If you misplace or forget your user ID or password, you can request that a copy of this information be sent to you by visiting the Forgot your Password page of this website. You will be prompted to provide your e-mail address and your user ID and password will be sent to the e-mail address you provide.

If I start to fill out an application and have to stop during the process, can I return and complete my application later?

We strongly recommend that you complete your initial application in one sitting. If you need to leave your application for any period of time, be sure that you have received an e-mail from the Recruitment Centre containing your user ID and password. You can return to your account to complete your application and provide the remaining information later.

Can I still apply if I don't have an e-mail address?

You need an e-mail address to apply to Transport Canada's recruitment Inventory. The Department uses your e-mail address for a number of reasons, including the following:

  • To send you your user ID and password when you create your application and to send this information to you in the future, if you misplace it for any reason;
  • To send you important information about your application and changes to the inventory;
  • To contact you with information if and when you have been screened in for a specific hiring process;
  • To distinguish your application from the applications of other persons with similar names when troubleshooting a problem you may have with your application.

If you do not have an e-mail address, but wish to apply, you should contact the Recruitment Centre by telephone at 1-866-707-7716. Obtaining an e-mail address is quick and easy and we would be happy to assist you in the process.

Are these permanent jobs?

Most positions for which Transport Canada is recruiting through this site are permanent (indeterminate period). However, managers may need someone for a specified period of time.

How many vacant positions do you have?

The Recruitment Centre is not able to predict when positions will become vacant. The number of vacant positions within Transport Canada can fluctuate. The frequency of vacancies depends on a number of factors including the availability of financial resources, attrition and operational requirements.

What is the Salary?

Salaries for the positions offered on this website vary according to the group and level of the position. Some specific positions also offer other allowances such as extra duty, terminable, and isolated post. What is generally in the federal government's benefits package?

The Federal Government offers a wide range of employee benefits. These include:

Will Transport Canada pay for my relocation?

Relocation expenses are not normally reimbursed to a person on initial appointment to the Public Service.

If you are not an employee of the federal Public Service, please be aware that any associated travel and/or relocation costs incurred, are not normally reimbursed/paid for by Transport Canada. However, in exceptional circumstances when it is considered that payment of such expenses is essential for effective staffing action, the travel and/or relocation assistance to be provided, if any, shall be negotiated with the candidate during the selection phase.

Therefore, please be aware that if you select work locations that require you to travel (during the selection process) or relocate (if a job offer is made), the onus may be on you to bear the costs of any travel and/or relocation.

Federal Public Service employees may wish to review their travel and relocation entitlements by visiting the Treasury Board Secretariat.

Trouble logging in to my account

What do I do if I try to log into my account with user ID and password and it doesn't work?

When typing your user ID, please note that the first five characters are letters and the final three characters are numbers. ( If you substitute the letter ‘O' for the number ‘0', and vice versa, you will not be able to access your account)

Suggestion: cut and paste your user ID and password directly from the original e-mail into the login boxes.

If at any time you have misplaced your user ID and password, you can request it to be sent to you again by clicking on the Forgot your Password link of this website.

Citizenship

Is Canadian citizenship a requirement for employment at Transport Canada?

Preference will be given to Canadian citizens. Please indicate in your application the reason for which you are entitled to work in Canada: Canadian citizenship, permanent resident status or work permit. Even if you are not a Canadian citizen, you are still entitled to apply and be considered for positions, in cases where there is an insufficient number of potentially qualified Canadian citizens.

Training and Certification

To what extent does Transport Canada offer training to its staff?

The training and development of staff is a high priority for Transport Canada, particularly in the safety and security fields. Continuous learning is essential to ensure a state-of-the-art knowledge of industry advances, domestically and internationally, and to carry out their regulatory responsibilities. However, you are required to possess the minimum requirements (education/ certification, experience) at the time of your application.

Students and Recent Graduates

Does Transport Canada offer internships, coop placements or apprenticeship opportunities?

Some internship and apprenticeship opportunities may be available at Transport Canada, but it is at the discretion of individual managers to organize and promote these placements and to conduct recruitment for any such positions.
