Signage Regulation

Where can I find information about putting signs up to advertise my business?

On-premise Signage:

  • governed by the Highway Signage Act
  • all signs within view of a roadway require a license
  • business signs are restricted to the property where the business is being conducted
  • Signs must be permanently located on the site, not mobile and not on the highway right of way
  • size, height and setback restrictions apply
  • application forms are available online or from Tourism PEI

Special Event Signage:

  • governed by the Highway Signage Act
  • temporary signage along public roads
  • duration for signs to be erected not more than three weeks
  • each event is permitted not more than six special event signs
  • application forms are available online or from Tourism PEI

Tourism Directional Signage:
  • governed by the Highway Signage Act
  • tourism directional signage should be within 15 kilometres from business location
  • annual rental charge for these signs
  • only available for tourism-related businesses
  • businesses are permitted a maximum of four tourism directional signs
  • application forms are available online or from Tourism PEI

Map Stop Signage:
  • governed by the Highway Signage Act
  • businesses posted on map stop must be within 15 kilometres of the signage unit
  • annual rental charge for map stop posting
  • only available for tourism-related businesses
  • application forms are available online or from Tourism PEI
