Update - CPMA Regulatory Framework Review

As previously announced, the Canadian Pari-Mutuel Agency (CPMA) has undertaken a comprehensive review of the regulatory framework respecting the regulation and supervision of betting on horse races.

The objective of this review is to ensure that pari-mutuel betting regulations stay current, and provide an opportunity for all stakeholders - including the Canadian public - to share their views on how to provide for the most modern, efficient and effective approach to protecting the betting public.

To achieve the benefit of a broad consultative basis, the CPMA developed a Discussion Document at which set out several themes for consideration when moving forward with a more modern and efficient regulatory model, and requested feedback by a closing date of August 15th, 2006.

With that date now behind us, the Executive Director of the CPMA would like to express his thanks to the many industry and public stakeholders who took the opportunity to share their thoughts and views concerning this important initiative.

CURRENT STATUS

The CPMA is now involved in the process of organizing and reviewing the submissions received. This includes thorough consultation both within the CPMA, as well as with other officials within the federal government. We will also be consulting with provincial regulators on many of the issues raised.

Given the complex nature of some of the regulatory issues being addressed, it is anticipated that further clarification will be necessary to ensure all views shared are accurately captured. Throughout the fall season, representatives of the CPMA will be contacting those individuals and groups whose submissions may require further clarification.

The CPMA will also be consulting with select international regulatory bodies to examine their models and ensure that the review benefits from consideration of a broad range of regulatory approaches.

Under our current timeline, a follow-up series of regionally-scheduled consultations with both industry and public stakeholders is planned for early in the new year.

Please contact either of the listed CPMA representatives should you have any questions on the Review:
