More Cash Available earlier to Manitoba Farmers Applying for CAIS Interim Payments

The interim payment rate under the 2005 Canadian Agricultural Income Stabilization (CAIS) program has been increased to 75 per cent from the current maximum of 50 per cent for producers in Manitoba. The increase has been agreed to by the Government of Canada and the Province of Manitoba.

The CAIS program helps producers protect their farm income from both small and large income declines. Under the CAIS program, producers send in their final applications and receive payments the year following their farm income loss. By applying for an interim payment, producers can receive part of their estimated 2005 CAIS payment early.

Producers who have already received an interim payment will automatically receive a cheque for the additional funds. Producers who have applied but have not yet received a payment will have their application processed at the new rate of 75 per cent.

Applications for the 2005 interim payment were mailed to Manitoba producers participating in the CAIS program in August. Information sessions and individual appointments were made available to producers in August and in September. More information, including program forms, is available on the program web site at www.agr.gc.ca/caisprogram or by calling 1-866-367-8506.

For more information, producers can contact the CAIS Administration toll free at 1-866-367-8506 or visit the program Web site at www.agr.gc.ca/caisprogram.
