Phase 2 (2008 - 2012)Confederation Building Masonry Confederation Building Masonry The 1930s-era Confederation Building houses offices and support services for parliamentarians. As one of the "newer" buildings in the Precinct, its exterior masonry has only recently begun to show significant signs of deterioration. A condition survey will soon be conducted to determine how much repair and conservation work is needed. The work itself will be carried out in Phase 2 of the Long-Term Vision and Plan beginning in 2009. West Block Renovation and Infill The West Block - one of Parliament Hill's original buildings - is in urgent need of renovations. Repairs will be combined with the building of a new infill structure to accommodate the House of Commons Chamber when the Centre Block is vacated for renovations in 2012. Work is expected to begin in 2009. West Block Agenda Work planned for the West Block includes:
The infill structure will be configured initially to provide a temporary House of Commons Chamber. When Centre Block renovations are complete, the West Block will be the permanent location of 54 parliamentarians Office units, 9 committee rooms, and various support services. Confederation-Justice Infill In Phase 2 of the Long-Term Vision and Plan, a building will be constructed between the Confederation and Justice buildings to provide additional office units for parliamentarians. These offices will be needed to meet expected increases in the number of parliamentarians as Canada's population grows. The building will include a number of underground parking spaces to replace surface parking that will be lost during the implementation of the Long-Term Vision and Plan. East Block Infill During renovation of the Centre Block in Phase 3 of the Long-Term Vision and Plan, the Senate Chamber will be housed in a new facility under the courtyard of the East Block. The infill building, to be constructed during Phase 2 of the Long-Term Vision and Plan, will house several Senate committee rooms in addition to the Senate Chamber. Later, when Centre Block renovations have been completed, the East Block infill building will house permanent Senate committee rooms.
