Institute of Infection and Immunity (III)

HIV / AIDS Research Initiative

In January 2005, the Government of Canada reaffirmed its commitment to fight the HIV/AIDS epidemic by announcing a doubling of federal funding from $42.4 million to $84.4 million by 2008-2009. The new Federal Initiative to Address HIV/AIDS in Canada (FI-HIV/AIDS) builds on the successes of its predecessor the Canadian Strategy on HIV/AIDS, and represents an enhanced and integrated federal response to HIV/AIDS.

As one of the four Federal partners in the FI-HIV/AIDS, CIHR is responsible for administering Canada's extramural research program and identifying research priorities in HIV/AIDS.

The CIHR HIV/AIDS Research Initiative is managed by the CIHR Institute of Infection and Immunity (III) under the leadership of Dr. Bhagirath Singh. Recognizing the breadth of research required to combat the epidemic, the initiative manages four research streams - biomedical and clinical research, health services and population health research, community-based research and the Canadian HIV Trials Network. Each stream of research is supported by a distinct budget.

To assist III with setting priorities and developing research initiatives, the CIHR HIV/AIDS Research Advisory Committee (CHARAC) was created. The committee membership ensures the HIV/AIDS Research Initiative is guided by a group with in-depth knowledge of all aspects of HIV, and encourages good communication between CIHR Institutes and other stakeholders interested in HIV/AIDS research.

Funding opportunities available under the CIHR HIV/AIDS Research Initiative can be found online.
