Japan-Canada Joint Health Research Program (Archived)

Request for Proposals 2007 (CIHR side)

Call for Proposals 2007 (JSPS side)

I. Program Description

The program, established in 2003, is jointly managed and funded by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). Its aim is to promote the development of Japanese-Canadian scientific co-operation between scientists from universities or affiliated research organizations in Japan and Canada through the support of collaborative research project grants.

II. Eligible Fields of Research

The call for 2007 proposals is a collaboration between JSPS and three CIHR Institutes, with applications requested in all areas embraced by the Institutes' mandates:

  1. The Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction (INMHA) supports research to enhance mental health, neurological health, vision, hearing, and cognitive functioning and to reduce the burden of related disorders through prevention strategies, screening, diagnosis, treatment, support systems, and palliation.
  2. The Institute of Human Development, Child and Youth Health (IHDCYH) supports research to enhance maternal, child, and youth health and to address causes, prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, short- and long-term support systems, and palliation for a wide range of health concerns associated with reproduction, early development, childhood, and adolescence.
  3. The Institute of Aging (IA) supports research that promotes healthy aging and addresses causes, prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, support systems, and palliation for a wide range of conditions associated with aging.

III. Eligibility of Applications (or applicants)

Applicants must hold a permanent position with universities or affiliated research institutes in Japan and Canada. Researchers at an early stage of their career, e.g. new investigators, doctoral students, post-doctoral fellows, residents and clinical fellows, may participate in the project but may not be a project leader. The involvement of these researchers and research trainees must be clearly outlined in the application. Both new and existing teams are encouraged to apply.

The organization of workshops and symposia as a forum for exchanging new ideas or technologies is acceptable as part of a project but the goals of the collaboration must be clearly described in the application.

IV. Number of Project Newly Adopted

Up to five new projects will be adopted for FY2007.

V. Application and Project Timetable

The timetable for the 2007 competition is as follows:

13 October 2006 for Canadian Applicants
20 October 2006 for Japanese Applicants

Each project will normally run for two years. A progress report after the first year and a final report at the end of the two-year award should be submitted to JSPS and CIHR respectively. Extensions for projects beyond 2 years may be approved upon mutual consent by JSPS and CIHR based on a renewal application.

VI. Application Procedure

Application form [ Word (100 KB) | PDF (67 KB ) | Help ]

Japanese and Canadian teams who wish to conduct a collaborative project under this program must submit concurrent identical applications including all required documentation, both written in English, to their respective sides.

Japanese project leaders should submit the completed application to JSPS via their affiliated university/institute.

Canadian project leaders should submit the application form to CIHR.

Applications submitted on only one side will not be accepted. Japanese/Canadian team leaders should, therefore, make sure that their counterpart submits a matching application by the required deadline.

VII. Procedures and Criteria for Selection

The selection procedures/criteria will be as follows:

VIII. Financial Support

The grants, co-funded by JSPS and CIHR may be used to cover the following costs incurred in the international portion of projects:

For Canadian researchers, a contribution towards expenditures directly related to the research project and international travel for exchange visits (less than 6 months) that are an essential part of the collaborative project (including coverage for domestic travel, subsistence and research expenses when necessary). The award per project is up to CDN $30,000 per year for two years.

For Japanese researchers, a contribution towards research expendables (including animals, materials and supplies, etc.) and international travel for exchange visits (less than 6 months) that are an essential part of the collaborative project (including coverage for domestic travel, subsistence and research expenses when necessary). The award per project is up to 2,500,000 yen per year for two years.

The sending party should cover its researchers' international travel and subsistence.
