Get the Facts: Inhalants

Inhalants Inhalants, commonly known as “sniff,” are toxic products that evaporate easily.  They produce fumes that can be inhaled to get “high”.

More than 1,400 products can be used as inhalants, including:

  • gas
  • lighter fluid
  • some glues
  • paint thinner
  • varnishes and paints
  • aerosols

After a product is inhaled, it travels directly into the bloodstream to affect lungs, heart, central nervous system and brain.

While the effects of one sniff lasts from a few minutes to half an hour, inhalants remain in the body for days.  With repeated use, these toxic chemicals can build up in the central nervous system and may cause serious brain damage.
