Alberta Region
HIV Edmonton
In partnership with the Capital Health Authority,
Canadian Liver Foundation (Western Region), and Schering Canada Inc.
for a Safe Body Art pamphlet. This pamphlet provides young people
with information about the increased risks of hepatitis C associated
with body piercing and tattooing. It provides information on what
to look for and questions to ask when choosing the artist. This project
will update, reprint and distribute a pre-existing pamphlet throughout
the province. Distribution points include participating body art
establishments and health-related programs. The need for this project
arose out of the recognition that large numbers of young people get
tattooed or pierced and that this activity represents a potential
health risk for hepatitis C. This pamphlet was developed because
the distribution of the initial information resulted in a high level
of demand for the information. This project is intended to respond
to the demand as well as to reflect current knowledge with respect
to hepatitis C prevention.

Central Alberta AIDS Network, Lethbridge HIV Connection, the Non-prescription
Needle Use Public Awareness Task Group and the Harm Reduction Programmers
Task Group for a Provincial Harm Reduction Conference. Five organizations
representing diverse audiences have partnered to host a conference
in response to the need for an opportunity for people working from
a harm reduction perspective in Alberta to experience mutual support
and initiate solutions to the issues of harm reduction. This project
supports the organization of the conference. Financial support will
also go toward a Hepatitis C Survey of Injection Drug Users. A second
activity includes a survey of past and current IDUs regarding the
impact of hepatitis C on their lifestyle with the goal of determining
what harm reduction strategies can be utilized to enhance their health
status and improve access to services.

AIDS Calgary Awareness Association
In partnership with Safeworks Calgary, 8th
and 8th Health Centre, HIV Edmonton, Central Alberta AIDS Network
Society, Streetworks and Lethbridge HIV Connection for HIV/Hepatitis
C Peer Support Group and Alberta Harm Reduction Conference. Through
a partnership of AIDS Calgary and Safeworks Calgary, this project
will develop a socially sensitive approach to a support group that
aims to increase empowerment, awareness and self-care among current
and recovering IDUs and their sexual partners. The support group
originated with concerns expressed by Safeworks clients and others
infected with and affected by hepatitis C. These individuals indicated
that they were having difficulty participating in groups where their
issues were not understood and their needs not met. AIDS Calgary
and Safeworks understand the lifestyle and literacy issues faced
by their clients and wish to address these issues by continually
educating themselves.
