Before completing the Training Module using the section by section instructions found below, it is imperative that you become familiar with the steps outlined on the How to Apply for Funding page, which provides an overview of how to apply to CIHR for funding.
Please note that these instructions are specific to the CGSMA program only. The guidelines that are accessed by clicking the "Guidelines" box at the top of each screen in the Training Module Web form may not necessarily apply to the CGSMA program.

Competition Date
Enter the CIHR deadline date for the competition to which you are applying (e.g. February 1).
Proposed CIHR Start Date
CIHR appreciates the difficulty of predicting a starting date at this time; however, candidates are still asked to estimate as best they can. Notification of funding decisions for the annual CGSMA competition are available in early July, and awards must start either on Spetember 1 or January 1 following the offer of award.
If the candidate has also applied to the Canada Graduate Scholarships Master's Awards Programs at either the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC ) or the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), they should respond Yes to "Have you applied to this program in the part two years?" Please note that candidates may submit only one application per year (September through August) for Master's level funding to either CIHR, SSHRC or NSERC.
Citizenship Status
The CGSMA program is open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada. If the candidate is a permanent resident, they should include a copy of their official permanent residency document. If this document is not received, the candidate will be considered ineligible to the program and the application will be withdrawn from the competition.

Primary Supervisor and Co-Supervisor
For candidates applying during their last year of an undergraduate program, and candidates who are not currently registered at a Canadian university, this section needs be completed only if they have already secured a potential supervisor for the research-based Master's program.
For candidates already enrolled in a research-based Master's program, their supervisor(s)' name(s) and their CIHR Personal Identification Number (PIN) MUST be included.
Awards for research training are tenable under the supervision of an independent investigator holding an academic appointment, and in areas of investigation where it is clear that the research has direct relevance to health. A maximum of two supervisors may be proposed on a single training application. The training program must include actual involvement in research, and not only courses in research methods. Students enrolled in programs oriented primarily toward professional specialty training are usually ineligible for these awards.
CIHR is willing to consider applications from students wishing to train with an investigator who does not hold an academic appointment. The proposed supervisor should first write to CIHR giving a brief outline of the training program, indicating the research facilities available and naming the institution through which the funds would be administered. Questions of eligibility must be resolved two weeks before the competition deadline date.
