Aquaculture and Fisheries Research Initiative Inc.

The Aquaculture and Fisheries Research Initiative was established by the Government of Prince Edward Island to provide industry associations, private businesses, public institutions and/or individual fishers and aquaculturists with increased access to applied and developmental research to address priorities and opportunities in the industry. The Initiative is aimed at:
  • Stimulating the conduct of scientifically valid short-term (normally three years or less) applied and developmental research related to the aquaculture sector, to the commercial fishery and to fish processing in Prince Edward Island.
  • Enhancing the knowledge-based economy within the province by promoting the creation of expertise that will be available to the industry.
  • Building and strengthening partnerships among research agencies and the private sector.
  • Focusing resources on aquaculture and fisheries related research and development capabilities.

The Initiative is administered by a Board of Directors representing the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Aquaculture, research agencies and the industry.
