Highlights

Total Health Expenditures

• Total health expenditures were $97.6 billion in 2000-01, up 7.2% from the 1999-2000 level of $91.1 billion. Per capita total health expenditures were $3,174 in 2000-01.
• In real terms, per capita health expenditures increased by 30.8% from 1980-81 to 1990-91, and by only 17.2% from 1990-91 to 2000-01.
• While females accounted for 50.5% of the total population, they accounted for 56.2% of total health expenditures in 2000-01. In comparison, males accounted for 49.5% of the total population and for 43.8% of total health expenditures.
• Health expenditures for seniors aged 65+ represented 42.7% of total health expenditures in 2000-01 while seniors aged 65+ accounted for 12.5% of the total population.
• From 1980-81 to 2000-01, the share of health expenditures for seniors aged 65+ increased less (22.0%) than their share of the population (33.0%).
• Health expenditures for seniors aged 65+ were $10,834 per capita in 2000-01.

Provincial and Territorial Government Health Expenditures

• Provincial and territorial government health expenditures were $63.3 billion in 2000-01, up 7.7% from the 1999-2000 level of $58.8 billion.
• It is estimated that females accounted for 58.1% of provincial and territorial government health expenditures in 2000-01, compared to 41.9% for males.
• About 49.7% of total provincial and territorial government health expenditures in 2000-01 were made for seniors aged 65+.

Private Sector Health Expenditures

• Total private sector health expenditures were $28.6 billion in 2000-01, an increase of 5.1% or $1.4 billion from the 1999-2000 level of $27.2 billion.
• Private sector health expenditures for seniors aged 65+ represented 31.1% of total private sector health expenditures in 2000-01.
• It is estimated that female seniors aged 65+ accounted for 62.5% of private sector health expenditures in 2000-01, compared to 37.5% for male seniors aged 65+.
