Licensing Program

Objectives and Fund Raising of the MPF

BACKGROUND

The Mounted Police Foundation (MPF) was established to assist the Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in administering the commercial use of the intellectual property which is the principal public identifier of the RCMP. The Foundation was incorporated in June of 1994. Its Board of Directors is comprised of prominent members of the community who are volunteering their time, energy and experience, in support of the RCMP and its community policing initiatives. As the Master Licensee for the RCMP, the MPF receives, maintains and manages funds generated from the Licensing Programs. These funds are directed to support and enhance RCMP community policing, public relations and crime prevention programs throughout Canada.

The Foundation assists the RCMP in ensuring stability in the quality of horses in the RCMP breeding program which supports the needs of the world famous Musical Ride. The Foundation holds public auctions to sell surplus horses from the breeding program. The funds generated from these sales are used to further enhance the breeding program.

The MPF also assists in the identification of National Sponsors of the RCMP Musical Ride and advises the Commissioner on the sponsorship program.

FUND RAISING:

The MPF prepares a preliminary schedule of activities through which revenues are generated. With the assistance of RCMP Public Affairs and Information Directorate and private sector specialists, the MPF, acting as the Master Licensee of RCMP Intellectual Property, licenses a limited number of manufacturers that produce and market goods which depict RCMP intellectual property. A royalty of 10 % of wholesale earnings is paid to the Foundation on behalf of the RCMP for license privilege.

The Mounted Police Foundation is committed to ensuring that the goodwill presently associated with the RCMP image, continues to offer strong, global marketing opportunities to the commercial and industrial communities. A professionally conducted marketing and licensing program ensures that the RCMP continues to be a prominent and respected ambassador of goodwill for Canada.

The program provides supplementary funding for many of the services, programs and initiatives the RCMP strives to bring to the Canadian public, without increased dependence on the taxpayer.
