Saskatchewan Company Fined $2,000 for Violating the Food and Drugs Act

On October 4, 2006, Mr. Kent Mark, president of Mark Wing's Noodle Manufacturing Ltd., was fined $2,000 after entering a guilty plea in Saskatchewan provincial court for contravening the Food and Drugs Act.

Between March 21, 2003, and August 18, 2003, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency conducted three inspections of the company's noodle manufacturing facility and mung bean sprout growing operation in Saskatoon, Sask. Two samples taken of ready-to-eat mung bean sprouts were found to be unsatisfactory mainly due to unhygienic conditions in the plant, a violation of Section 7 of the Food and Drugs Act, which states: no person shall manufacture, prepare, preserve, package or store for sale any foods under unsanitary conditions.

The CFIA is responsible for enforcing a variety of federal legislation, including the Food and Drugs Act as it relates to food. It protects consumers by contributing to food safety, the protection of plants and the health of animals in Canada.
