Health Canada's role in blood safety

Health Canada's Health Protection Branch (HPB) regulates the collection and manufacturing of blood, blood components, and products derived from blood in Canada.

HPB takes a comprehensive risk-management approach to blood safety, calling for coordinated initiatives in many different areas, with the cumulative effect of continuous strengthening and improvement in blood safety.

The Therapeutic Products Programme, principally through its Bureau of Biologics and Radiopharmaceuticals and Bureau of Medical Devices, is responsible for the regulatory and inspection aspects of blood and blood products and for the regulation of test kits used in blood safety, respectively.

HPB's Laboratory Centre for Disease Control is responsible for public health intelligence, placing a strong emphasis on better blood science.

Each of these organizations contributes in its own way to ensuring that Canadians continue to have a supply of safe, effective blood and blood products.
