Governmental Partnerships
Health Canada supports a number of science and research activities. However, the work we do is not limited to what goes on within the walls of our laboratories. We have many partners who help us to make sure we have access to the best science available when we make decisions and policies.
Many of our partners are, in fact, other federal government departments. We work with scientists and researchers in departments and agencies such as:
- Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada;
- Environment Canada;
- Canadian Food Inspection Agency; and
- National Research Council Canada.
These partnerships help make sure we continue to meet Canadians' health care needs.
The following are just a few examples of the work we do with our governmental partners.
Food for Health
Health Canada is a major sponsor of the Food for Health travelling exhibit that will be seen around Canada. Led by the Canadian Agriculture Museum , the exhibit looks at the history, science and everyday practice of food safety as well as the impact that our food choices have on our health. This exhibit will give Canadians tips on how to choose nutritious and healthy food and how to handle that food safely.
Federal Partners in Technology Transfer (FPTT)
In FPTT, Canada's federal science-based departments and agencies
work together to transfer research and technology from government
labs to the private sector. Their business skills and technical
expertise result in the effective transfer and commercialization of
innovations developed in federal laboratories.
Toxic
Substances Research Initiative (TSRI)
Completed in 2002, the Initiative funded a variety of research
projects on toxic substances. The research funded by the TSRI helped
to protect the health and environment of Canadians by gathering
an improved knowledge of toxic substances and their adverse effects.
Research
in Complementary and Alternative Medicine
Health Canada's Natural Health Products Directorate is collaborating
with three institutes of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research
(CIHR). This collaboration supports a research network in complementary
and alternative health care in Canada.
Canadian
Patient Safety Institute
The Canadian Patient Safety Institute collaborates with territorial,
provincial and federal governments and health system stakeholders
to provide advice on effective strategies to improve patient safety.
Water
Quality and Health Canada
Health Canada is involved in a number of activities related to
Canadian drinking water quality. Some of these activities are conducted
jointly with the provinces and territories, including the assessment
of drinking water treatment processes and the impact of selected
contaminants in tap and groundwater.
The
Federal / Provincial / Territorial Group on Nutrition (FPTGN)
Brings together professionals working in nutrition policy and
program development to promote the nutritional health of Canadians.
In recent years, the FPTGN has contributed to a wide range of working
papers, nutrition guidelines and evaluation frameworks.
The
Family Violence Initiative
On behalf of the federal government and 12 partner departments,
Health Canada coordinates the Family Violence Initiative (FVI).
The FVI promotes public awareness of the risk factors of family
violence; strengthens the criminal justice, housing, and health
systems to respond; and supports data collection, research and evaluation
efforts to identify effective interventions.
science.gc.ca
The federal government's new science portal, science.gc.ca,
was launched October 19, as part of the Government of Canada's
Government On-Line Initiative. Featuring appealing graphics and
an easy-to-navigate index, the site includes timely science-related
stories and resources aimed at both the general public and students.
