National Office of the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System

Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) is Canada's hazard communication standard. The key elements of the system are:

  • cautionary labelling of containers of National Office of the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System "controlled products"
  • the provision of material safety data sheets (MSDSs); and
  • worker education and training programs.

This national system is implemented through complementary and interlocking federal, provincial and territorial legislation. The National Office of the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System, which resides in Health Canada, serves as the national coordinator for the overall administration of this national system in Canada and is also the national secretariat for this federal, provincial, and territorial government partnership program.

See National WHMIS site for more information.
