  • Criteria Air Contaminants (CACs) Technical Source Guide for Reporting to the National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) - 2002
CACs are composed of oxides of nitrogen, sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds, and particular matter. This guide was prepared to provide an overview of the sources and processes that may be sources of criteria air contaminants (CACs). It is important to note that facilities should refer to the Guide for Reporting to the National Pollutant Release Inventory - 2002 and the Supplementary Guide for Reporting Criteria Air Contaminants (CACs) to the National Pollutant Release Inventory - 2002 prior to consulting this guide.

  • Guide for Reporting to the National Pollutant Release Inventory, 2003
The National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) is at the centre of the Government of Canada's efforts to track toxic substances. For the 2003 reporting year, there were 323 substances listed in the NPRI.

  • Guide for Reporting to the National Pollutant Release Inventory, 2004
The National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) is at the centre of the Government of Canada's efforts to track toxic substances. It provides information on pollutant releases to the environment, disposals and transfers for recycling. This Guide provides a general overview of the reporting requirements for all NPRI substances. It will help you to determine whether you are required to report and, if so, what you have to report. This document will guide you through preparing and submitting an NPRI report for the 2004 reporting year.

  • Informing Canadians on Pollution 2002
Highlights of the 2000 National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI)

  • Informing Canadians on Pollution, 2003 - Highlights from the 2001 National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI)
There are 265 substances on the 2001 NPRI compared with 268 on the 2000 NPRI. The following changes were made to the NPRI substances list in 2001: four types of cresol listed individually in 2000 are consolidated under a single heading, and the substance phosphoric acid was removed from the 2001 NPRI, as its listing on the NPRI was not resulting in the right kind of data being collected. For 2003, the reporting requirements for this substance were improved. A major change was also made in 2001 to the way in which disposals are reported in the NPRI.

  • National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) - National Overview 2000
This report provides information on 268 listed substances, specifically their on-site releases to air, water, land and underground injection, and off-site transfers for disposal or recycling.

  • National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI): A Guidance Manual for the Wastewater Sector
This Manual was developed to help wastewater facilities understand clearly whether and how they should report to the NPRI. The purpose of this Manual is to provide information on which wastewater facilities must report and how they should calculate releases based on monitoring, mass balance, emission factor calculations or engineering estimates.

  • National Pollutant Release Inventory - National Overview 2001 - Reporting Requirements
Only facilities that meet established reporting criteria are required to report to the NPRI. This report explains the reporting requirements.

  • National Pollutant Release Inventory - National Overview 2002 - Final Disposal and Off-site Transfers for Treatment Prior to Final Disposal
In 2002, 3 191 facilities across Canada filed reports on NPRI pollutants. Of these facilities, 1 053 reported on-site and off-site final disposal of NPRI pollutants. That was an increase of approximately 15% from the year 2001. However, some of these changes could have been due to modifications in the reporting requirements. The totals for on-site and off-site final disposals were an estimated 193 376 tonnes and 44 286 tonnes respectively. Facilities reported having sent 193 796 tonnes of NPRI pollutants for on-site final disposal in 2002.

  • National Pollutant Release Inventory - National Overview 2002 - Off-site Transfers for Recycling and Energy Recovery
    In 2002, 3 191 facilities reported releases of NPRI pollutants; of those facilities, 1 012 submitted data on off-site transfers for recycling and energy recovery totalling 1 235 268 tonnes. That was an increase of 107 218 tonnes (or 9.5%) from 2001. Off-site recycling and energy recovery activities in 2002 can be broken down as follows: other recovery, reuse and recycling - 869 849 tonnes (70.4% of national total); metals and metal compounds - 263 247 tonnes (21.3%); acids or bases - 62 803 tonnes (5.1%); catalysts - 12 412 tonnes (1.0%);

  • National Pollutant Release Inventory - National Overview 2002 - On-site Releases of NPRI Pollutants
For 2002, 3 191 facilities across Canada reported to the NPRI. Of these, 2 595 facilities submitted data for on-site releases greater than 0 tonne. That was an increase of approximately 18% from 2001. The total on-site releases of NPRI pollutants were estimated at 208 562.4 tonnes. Releases to air accounted for 129 778.0 tonnes (62.3%), releases to water 72 969.0 tonnes (35.0%) and releases to land 5 626.0 tonnes (2.7%).

  • National Pollutant Release Inventory - National Overview 2002 - Reporting Requirements
In general, any person who owns or operates a facility in Canada was required to report to the NPRI for 2002 if the facility met or exceeded all criteria for the type of activity, the number of employees or hours worked, and, in most cases, the amount of NPRI-listed substances manufactured, processed or otherwise used in specified amounts (referred to as "thresholds"). Any facility in Canada meeting the NPRI reporting criteria for the 2002 reporting year was required to submit a report to Environment Canada by June 1, 2003.

Between 2001 and 2002, facilities reported increases (<15%) in the amounts of NPRI pollutants released on site, sent for final disposal or for treatment prior to final disposal, and transferred off site for recycling and energy recovery.

  • One Window to National Environmental Reporting (OWNERS)
OWNERS is an on-line reporting mechanism being used by Environment Canada, provincial and municipal governments and private sector organizations to collect environmental data from industry. It was developed in response to industry requests to streamline and simplify environmental reporting requirements. OWNERS also provides a platform for government to collect environmental information in a more timely, efficient and cost-effective manner, and to improve the quality and accuracy of data.

  • Pollutants in my environment: An Introduction to the National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI)
The National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) was established in 1992 to provide a national, publicly accessible database of pollutants released into the Canadian environment. Each year, releases and transfers of pollutants from almost 2000 facilities nationwide are reported. This document provides an introduction to the NPRI and demonstrates the many possible uses of this research tool.

  • Supplementary Guide for Reporting Criteria Air Contaminants (CACs) to the National Pollutant Release Inventory, 2002
Since CACs were added for the first time to the NPRI for the 2002 reporting year, this Supplementary Guide was created to assist facility owners and operators understand the NPRI reporting criteria for CACs, determine if they should report for any of these substances, and estimate air releases for these substances. This Supplementary Guide contains information on the reporting criteria for CACs, examples of CAC sources at facilities, methods of estimating emissions of CACs, the NPRI reporting form for CACs and a list of reference materials.
