National Advisory Council on Aging, 1980-2005
 

The National Advisory Council on Aging was created on May 1, 1980, to assist and advise the Minister of Health on all matters related to the aging of the Canadian population and the quality of life of seniors. These may be matters that the Minister refers to the Council or that the Council considers appropriate.

The day is in support of the United Nations International Plan of Action which recognizes the significance of elder abuse as a public health and human rights issue. Throughout the world, abuse and neglect of older persons is largely under-recognized or treated as an unspoken problem. Research indicates that public education campaigns like World Elder Abuse Awareness Day new window (WEAAD) are vital for informing people in a growing number of countries about elder abuse and active involvement of the media is central to its success.

The National Initiative for the Care of the Elderly (NICE), a new national network of community practitioners and researchers who specialize in gerontology, will officially be launched on June 14. NICE, a New Initiative Network funded by the Networks of Centres of Excellence (NCE), is intended to encourage the transfer of knowledge of best practices for the care of the elderly, and is the first network of its kind in Canada.
