Here are a few things to keep in mind:
|
Always use the sidewalk. |
But keep your eyes peeled
and your ears wide open (sorry, no headphones!). Don't forget,
a lot of skaters and parents with strollers also use the sidewalks.
So be alert and be aware of what's going on around you.
|
No sidewalk? Get on the shoulder. |
Roads that have no sidewalks
usually have "shoulders" - those narrow, unpaved
strips that run along the side of the road. Stay on these shoulders,
as far away from the road as possible, to keep safe. And make sure
to walk in the direction facing the traffic, so you can actually see
the front part of the cars as they drive by.
|
Be seen. |
When walking in the
dark, wear clothes and shoes that are either made of reflective material,
or have reflective strips added on them, or wear light coloured clothes
for walking at night in order to be seen in the dark.
|
Look out for those driveways! |
Watch for cars coming
out of driveways and small laneways. Drivers going backwards out of
these driveways and laneways may not be able to see you. If you see
that the white lights on the back of a car or truck are lit up, this
means the car is moving backwards. Some trucks also make a high, beeping
sound when they're backing up, so listen up!
|
Look both ways before you cross. |
Turn your head
left, right and then
left again to look for
traffic before stepping out onto the road. If you see a car coming,
don't cross. And never try to "beat a car to it"
by running. Remember: a car can't stop as fast as you can. So
always think - and look - before you cross.
|
Cross at a traffic light, corner or crosswalk. |
Whether you are at a
corner or a crosswalk, it's important to make sure all cars are stopped
before you cross. Whenever you can, cross at an intersection with
a traffic light. Look for the predestrian signal. It will show you
a graphic like this
to show you when you can cross. If you are
at a cross walk that has a pole, press the button on the pole and
point your finger to let drivers know you want to cross. Before you
put that first foot forward, look LEFT, RIGHT and LEFT AGAIN to make
sure no cars are moving towards you.
