The Ombudsman’s Special Recognition Award – 2007

The new Ombudsman’s Special Recognition Award recognizes individuals and groups across the Defence community who have clearly gone above and beyond the normal requirements of their job to help others in resolving a specific problem, or who have brought positive and lasting change to the Defence community through improvements to their workplace, existing policies and regulations or the quality of life of DND/CF members.

The Ombudsman’s Special Recognition Award, which was created in 2006, replaces the Ombudsman’s Commendation for Ethics and better reflects and reinforces the ultimate mission of the Ombudsman’s Office: contributing to substantial and long-lasting improvements in the Defence community.

Nomination Criteria

Anyone in the Defence community can nominate members of the Canadian Forces and/or civilian employees in the Department of National Defence who demonstrate one or all of the following principles:

  • A willingness and ability to resolve problems informally and quickly, as well as to support alternative means of resolving disputes.
  • The courage not to turn a blind eye to difficult situations, but to find ways to resolve them in a manner consistent with fairness, loyalty and integrity.
  • The identification of issues of unfairness and a means of resolving them.
  • A systemic approach to problem solving.
  • The resourcefulness to propose or consider innovative solutions.

Prize

Award Recipients receive:

  • A glass sculpture created by a well-known Aboriginal artist;
  • A framed citation; and
  • A trip to Ottawa to be recognized at a special lunch and ceremony on Parliament Hill in May 2007.

In previous years, the Minister of National Defence, the Chief of the Defence Staff and numerous senior leaders and officials have attended the lunch and ceremony honouring Award Recipients.

Special Recognition Award Process

The Ombudsman’s Advisory Committee will review all submissions received on or before December 31, 2006, and recommend recipients to the Ombudsman. With this advice and information, the Ombudsman will select a maximum of two recipients for the Special Recognition Award. All nominators and nominees – whether successful or unsuccessful – will be advised, via a letter from the Ombudsman, of the outcome of the process before February 28, 2007.
