TESTIMONIALS

  • The internship has taught me a great deal not only about information technology and the subtleties of Web site design and the Information Highway; but has also provided me with enormous insight into the importance of putting heritage on the Web and the challenges of such a task.
I have not only gained deeper insight and appreciation for my own province's rich cultural, natural and historic past, but I have also been given the opportunity to work with some of the leading figures in both the technical and cultural fields who have inspired me to continue with the challenges of integrating these two very different but mutually beneficial worlds.

Kim Palmer, Edmonton, Alberta

  • In the spring of 1998, I began my summer job search. In my search, I came across a job posting for a position as Collections Database Facilitator at the Winnipeg Art Gallery [...]
[It] has been an irreplaceable experience. The work has been challenging and rewarding, my colleagues are a pleasure to work with and I have learned a lot about Canadian art and the inner workings of a large cultural institution. Thanks to the generous support of my employer, my position continued throughout the remaining 1998-1999 school year as a part-time position, leading to full-time employment once again in the summer of 1999.
I [...] feel grateful for such a wonderful opportunity. My experience at the Winnipeg Art Gallery has been very fulfilling [...]

Jonathan Van Winkle, Winnipeg, Manitoba

  • [translation]
[It was] an extremely constructive job as regards my field of study and area of interest. I did not expect to be given so much responsibility at the outset. I performed very well and am fully satisfied [...] Saskatchewan is a very interesting place [...] It is a part of the country that was completely unknown to me and to which I will certainly return [...]

Simon Turcot, Rosemere, Quebec

  • What happens when you transplant a small-town girl into the jungles of Ottawa? I would never have found the answer had it not been for my participation in the Young Canada Works program for 1999. Not only did the program give me the opportunity to use the skills I have spent years in University trying to perfect, it also provided me with the chance to experience an entirely new atmosphere.
Too often, student employment offers little more than summer activity and the funds to continue school in the fall. This program, however, gives students useful skills, excellent work experience and the opportunity to learn to function in an entirely new stream of activity all at once. It also provides the chance to decide whether or not the studies of the past will accommodate the work of the future.

Heather Berringer, Sackville, Nova Scotia

  • I was working at the Old Port of Quebec Interpretation Centre [...] I was immersed in another language, so it really gave me the opportunity to improve my French [...] the opportunity to gain the confidence in dealing with another language.
I constantly talk about my experience because it was a big part of my life [...] it was almost like a stepping stone because it was my first period of independence.

Alexis Ewanovich, Manotick, Ontario

  • Young Canada Works really helped me focus in on what education I wanted to pursue because at the time I was just sort of floating around in school, not knowing where to go or what to do. After my involvement with Young Canada Works, I realized where I wanted to head in the future [...]. I've learned so much about my own province, its culture, and about the other historic sites in Canada and the other national parks [...]

Bobbi Jo Bradley, Charlottetown, PEI
