Calibration Service

Measurement Canada calibrates and certifies standards of mass, length, volume, pressure, temperature and various electrical quantities, so that measurement in domestic and international trade will be uniform. These standards form the basis of all trade measurement in Canada. The essence of accurate and traceable metrological services is standards. Measurement Canada's Calibration Services Laboratory (CSL) calibrates, certifies and maintains an extensive inventory of measurement standards for mass, electricity, gas and liquid volume, length, pressure and temperature measurement.

The measurement standards which are certified by the Calibration Services Laboratory are used principally by Measurement Canada inspectors and accredited organizations to test and certify measuring instruments used in trade. Every standard meets the accuracy requirements set in the Electricity and Gas Inspection Act and Regulations, Weights and Measures Act and Regulations.

Also, to ensure measurement uniformity in domestic and in international trade, Calibration Services Laboratory personnel actively participate in various national and international intercomparison programs for standards.

Our Delegation of Authorities is an innovative program that allows organizations to calibrate and certify certain standards on behalf of Measurement Canada. These organizations satisfy Measurement Canada that an acceptable quality assurance program has been developed and implemented, this program ensures that accuracy and equity in trade measurement is maintained.

For information on the certification requirements for calibration consoles, refer to Electricity Bulletin E-21, Specifications for the Calibration , Certification and Use of Electricity Calibration Consoles (S-E-01).
