In the 2005 Throne Speech, the provincial government recognized
the challenges associated with meeting the needs of a growing
seniors’ population, and committed to establishing a new
Premier's Council on Aging and Seniors' Issues. Premier
Campbell appointed Dr. Patricia Baird as Chair, and
the 17 members of the Council were announced in October 2005.
They were asked to examine two key issues:
- How to support seniors’ ability to continue as
contributing members of society; and
- How to support seniors’ independence and health.
Since October 2005, the Council has met with seniors,
community organizations, aging experts, academics, health
professionals and business leaders throughout B.C.
The Premier’s Council on Aging and Seniors’ Issues submitted
its report to government on Dec. 1, 2006.
