Our History
They assumed their posts in 1858, when gold discoveries brought fortune seekers to the small Port of Victoria by the tens of thousands. Appointed by Sir James Douglas to oversee the tremendous growth of the region, Government Agents were among B. C.’s first officers of the Crown. From tax collection and law enforcement to road building and liquor sales, Government Agents played important roles in the formation of a spectacular province.
