Our History
Government Agents have provided
provincial services to British Columbians since the 19th century, when the rush for gold
inspired new communities, and a new province.
They assumed their posts in 1858, when gold discoveries brought fortune seekers to the
small Port of Victoria by the tens of thousands.
Appointed by Sir James Douglas to oversee the
tremendous growth of the region,
Government Agents were among B. C.s first officers of the Crown. From tax collection
and law enforcement to road building and liquor sales, Government Agents played important
roles in the formation of a spectacular province.

Today many of the earliest responsibilities assumed by Government Agents have changed, but
their commitment to quality customer service is just as strong.
