New Species
According to predictions from the National Marine Fisheries Service of the United States, projected global demand for seafood products will exceed supply without growth and technological advancement in aquaculture to supplement the harvest of wild stocks. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization predicts that by the year 2030 more than half of all fish consumed are likely to originate from aquaculture facilities.
In BC, the finfish aquaculture industry is dominated by salmon. Farmed salmon is BC's largest agricultural export crop, with annual production volumes of 70-80,000 tonnes in recent years. This volume of product is valued at more than $300 million and the industry employs more than 2,000 people in BC's coastal communities. Recently, global farmed salmon production exceeded 1,000,000 tonnes.
