ICE FISHING CONDITIONS

The ice fishing season begins in early January in most regions of Québec. The Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pérade area should be ready to welcome fishing enthusiasts around December 26 or 27, although it’s strongly recommended that you contact the outfitters to ensure that conditions are appropriate for this activity.

For Québecers, beneficiaries of an abundant wildlife, hunting and fishing are more than just sports. They provide a unique opportunity to get back to basics and to re-discover the essential elements of their natural heritage. In the forests, lakes and rivers that make up this immense territory that is Québec, outfitters offer hunting and fishing enthusiasts lodging, equipment, guides and other logistical support—in a word, all the amenities needed to facilitate encounters with big caribou, moose and deer, black bears, and battling fish!

Parc national du Saguenay, Saguenay-Lac-Saint-JeanIce fishing is a tradition handed down by the First Nations and currently practised just about everywhere in Québec. As soon as the ice is thick enough, colourful little wooden shacks are dragged out onto lakes and rivers. The shacks, which are usually rented, provide varying degrees of comfort. Basically, they offer much-appreciated shelter from the wind and allow ice-fishers to extend their time outdoors. Off-season, the shacks are stored along the shoreline.

Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pérade, MauricieSome of the most popular ice fishing spots include Saint-Pierre and Deux Montagnes lakes, and the Saguenay Fjord, which is dotted with more than 1,700 shacks during the season. Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pérade, near Trois-Rivières (Mauricie), is renowned for its tomcod. Every winter, from Christmas to early February, a veritable village of shacks is erected on the Rivière Sainte-Anne, attracting thousands of sport fishers and curious on-lookers, often in families and groups.

An ice fishing trip in Québec will net you mainly walleye, yellow perch and pike. Redfish, cod and turbot are common in the Saguenay, and you're likely to catch rainbow and speckled trout up in the Laurentians. Outfitters offer packages (including shack and equipment rental, hole-cutting and bait) guaranteed to hook you for life!
