Initiatives

The Queen Charlotte Islands Forest District hosts various research projects as well as employment opportunities for high school students.  The research that is conducted here provides valuable information on how our resources are managed, and ways to improve for the future.  We see our Summer Student Work Experience program as an important step in contributing to our community as well as providing students with the opportunity to experience resource management on a first-hand basis.    

Research

The Coast Forest Region Research Branch has engaged in a research project based partly in the Queen Charlotte Islands Forest District.  This project gathers information on hydrology for Chinukundl and Gregory Creeks.  The precipitation data that has been gathered can be found below.

Summer Work Experience Program

The Summer Recreation and Work Experience Program was spearheaded in 2005 to engage local youth in the management of natural resources on the Queen Charlotte Islands.  The primary goal of the program is to encourage youth to explore future careers in resource management.

In 2005, four summer students from local high schools were hired and given exposure to different aspects of resource management over a six week period.  Job shadowing was provided by the following companies and organizations:

• Husby Forest Products
• Parks Canada
• Laskeek Bay Conservation Society
• Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada
• Haida Fisheries
• Ministry of Environment
• Teal Cedar Group
• Infinity Resource Consulting
• Ministry of Forests and Range
• Tlell Watershed Society
• Island Hikers Association

It is important to the program that the students involved gain as comprehensive experience as possible.  For that reason, the transfer of knowledge and skills from local experts to the students is an integral part of the program.  Students are exposed to different perspectives and approaches towards resource management, through the involvement of government, industry, and First Nations perspectives.

It is hoped that students will be able to take the skills and knowledge that they gain away from the program and apply it in some capacity in the future.
