The mandate of the Office of Northern Affairs is to promote the social and economic development of northern Saskatchewan communities in partnership with the federal government and northern communities by supporting regional development and development of businesses and industries, and co-ordinating government activities in the Northern Administration District (NAD) of Saskatchewan.





Northern residents and communities will have opportunities to improve their quality of life and increase their self-reliance. With a greater capacity to create a viable social and economic future for themselves, northerners will take a greater role in the social and economic development of their communities and their regions.

 
  • Lead the cross-governmental Northern Strategy and co-ordinate interdepartmental activities;
  • Develop policies and advise departments on responses to initiatives and issues in the north;
  • Deliver economic development programming and services in the Northern Administration District;
  • Assist the development of key sectors of the northern economy (e.g. mining, forestry, tourism, fisheries);
  • Broker and co-ordinate among departments, communities, and industry to resolve issues and to better capture northern opportunities;
  • Provide integrated provincial government communications to northerners;
  • Administer northern mineral surface leases; and,
  • Manage the Northern Mines Monitoring Secretariat (NMMS) and Environmental Quality Committee (EQC) program that monitors northern uranium mining developments and operations.
